{"id":633,"date":"2015-04-22T07:40:44","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T11:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/?p=633"},"modified":"2015-04-22T07:54:46","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T11:54:46","slug":"bombs-and-bicycles-the-skid-kids-of-postwar-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/2015\/04\/bombs-and-bicycles-the-skid-kids-of-postwar-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Bombs and Bicycles &#8211; The &#8220;Skid Kids&#8221; of Postwar London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the years after World War II and unlikely sport arose from the ashes of London&#8217;s bomb sites, cycle speedway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/skid-kids-east-surrey-grove-peckham-south-london-1948.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-632 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/skid-kids-east-surrey-grove-peckham-south-london-1948-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"skid-kids-east-surrey-grove-peckham-south-london-1948\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/skid-kids-east-surrey-grove-peckham-south-london-1948-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/skid-kids-east-surrey-grove-peckham-south-london-1948-600x405.jpg 600w, https:\/\/velologic.com\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/skid-kids-east-surrey-grove-peckham-south-london-1948.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Kids from as young as 13 put London&#8217;s many bomb sites to productive use by turning them into speedway tracks and racing their bicycles around them.<\/p>\n<p>Well I use the word &#8220;bicycles&#8221; but according to reports, most of these bicycles were not roadworthy, and many were homemade, sporting old wheels and frames, and bent gas piping for handlebars.<\/p>\n<p>That did not stop the &#8220;skid kids,&#8221; who blasted around the dirt tracks dreaming of one day racing real speedway.<\/p>\n<h2>Cycle Speedway Boom in Postwar London<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cycle Speedway [Vintage] New Cross, London\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJA6WQu1lbY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"Wikipedia: Cycle Speedway\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cycle_speedway\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>, the sport actually goes back to 1920s, but it really took off in London in 1945 with the abundance of bomb sites providing dirt tracks for the city&#8217;s daring youth.<\/p>\n<p>Intercity tournaments commenced in 1946, and in 1950 the international clash between England and the Netherlands drew 10,000 spectators.<\/p>\n<p>In it&#8217;s heyday in 1950, there were over 200 teams in East London alone. The total number of racers across the country is estimated at between 30,000 and100,000.<\/p>\n<p>This emerging sport was a significant milestone in history, according to sports historian Simon Inglis:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the birth of youth culture that hadn&#8217;t existed before, which enabled kids to have a completely separate identity to their parents for the first time &#8211; cycle speedway was something that no adult did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After 1950, the bomb sites were cleared and the sport declined rapidly, going back to it&#8217;s local roots at a few scattered tracks around the country, but essentially fading into obscurity.<\/p>\n<p>BBC Magazine has an interesting <a title=\"Cycle Speedway in London\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-31013387\" target=\"_blank\">article on the sport<\/a> with comments from some of the original racers, one of whom at 84 is still racing his bicycle today (on the road).<\/p>\n<p>Cycle Speedway is still going today in the UK, administered by <a title=\"Cycle Speedway in Britain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcycling.org.uk\/cyclespeedway\" target=\"_blank\">British Cycling<\/a>, and it is practiced in Europe and the United States.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: <a title=\"Wikipedia: Cycle Speedway\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cycle_speedway\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>, <a title=\"Cycle Speedway in Britain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-31013387\" target=\"_blank\">BBC Magazine<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the years after World War II and unlikely sport arose from the ashes of London&#8217;s bomb sites, cycle speedway.
