How Two Tiny Centimeters Unlocked 500 Miles

Reader Brian F tells a story that dramatically illustrates the potential power or destructiveness of a bike fit, and how little adjustments can have major effects. 1500 miles in to a 2000 mile bike tour he faced defeat due to unbearable pain…

“We had already done about 1500 miles, but I started to develop saddle sores. I spent almost two entire days coasting and standing because I couldn’t bear to pedal while sitting. I was resigned to having to take a bus for the last 500 miles of the trip, which was a completely demoralizing thought. About four in the morning I woke up in my tent and said out loud, “Lower the seat.” A couple of hours later I lowered the seat by about 2 cm. and I was good to go. It was like a miracle.

Don’t you love the way his mind figured it out while he was sleeping?

Speaking of bike fit and saddle sores, I had the hardest time finding a saddle that was comfortable. I used to ride quite a bit, up to 40-50 miles was no problem, but a couple of days a week I’d do 90 miles, and occasionally I’d do 120-150.

It’s those long rides that revealed the weakness in a saddle for me… and frankly scared me a bit as I started experiencing lingering numbness and pain.

Finally I found one that worked, here’s the saddle that saved my butt.

Saddles are a very personal thing, but if you’ve had issues and are not quite satisfied with your saddle, I recommend giving this one a try.

World’s First 3D Printed Bike Frame

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will. – Vince Lombardi

—–

World’s First 3D Printed Bike Frame

It’s a titanium alloy mountain bike from Empire Cycles. It consists of titanium alloy printed parts glued together.

3D printing is in its infancy… and expensive, so why do it? Well the big reason is that they can custom make intricate parts that are super light yet super strong. They do this by refining the design to remove any bits that are not contributing to the strength of the part.

Other advantages over traditional manufacturing:

Weight savings, traditional titanium frame weights 4.63 lbs, the 3D printed version 3.09 lbs – a weight saving of 33%

Lot more freedom in design, not limited to gluing tubes or molded segments together.

Design can be modified easily, you basically just edit a 3D model

Rapid prototyping and iteration, create and test designs quickly

There’s a lot more interesting stuff they can do too, such as print the actual serial number into the frame, or your name, or an RFID chip for identification. I imagine sponsors would love to have their logos printed into the frame.

The 3D frame cost $31,000 so don’t expect to buy one off the shelf anytime soon. Until then use a name sticker like everyone else.

The Bling Helmet: A Smart Helmet

Helmet technology has been pretty static for decades, but lately it’s been hotting up. I can think of a few helmets in the last couple of years, from the moderately innovative, to the radical “Invisible” helmet.

Now there’s a new shell for your nut, waiting in the wings. The Bling Helmet claims to be “smart” and brings new powers to the lowly and previously dumb helmet, including lights, music, phone calls, walkie-talkie and SOS messaging. Phew.

Livall Bling Helmet

The helmet comes with the Bling Jet, a remote control for your helmet. It allows you to control your helmet’s lights and control your phone, so you can answer calls, play music, and even shoot video of your ride.

The SOS Alert is triggered when the helmet detects a crash or fall, it automatically messages your emergency contacts.

Can’t you just see your buddies slapping you around your head trying to trigger the SOS message? Or is that just my idea of fun?

The Bling with the Jet remote control will retail for around $238.

The Bling Helmet is marketed as “the first smart and safe helmet.” Hmm… how safe is it to use that technology while riding?

IMO the big danger with phones is not the device and whether it’s hands-free or not, it’s the divided attention. You can’t have your full attention on the road, be fully aware of what’s happening around you, and be anticipating dangers and “what-ifs,” if you’re having a conversation with someone.

How about fiddling about on the handlebar remote trying to find that song?

Ain’t smart. Ain’t safe. Not saying you shouldn’t do it. I’ve done it in certain circumstances. But let’s have no illusions as to the dangers involved. And having our helmets call our friends to tell them we’re dead, but hey we went out rocking, isn’t much consolation.

New From Garmin: The Word’s Smallest GPS Cycling Computers

Garmin has just launched the Garmin Edge 20 and 25, the world’s smallest GPS-enabled cycling computers.

New Affordable Power Meter in the Works

A new power meter looks to hit the market soon. Invented by British cyclist, Ken Norton, “Limits” power meter promises to be one of the cheapest power meters available, selling for a mere $385 (260 GBP), ridiculously cheap compared to most power meters available.

Limits is specifically designed to be affordable and within reach of most cyclists; and it’s designed to be easily interchangeable, so you can switch it between any bike easily, including your mountain bike.

How It Works

Limits Power Meter Installation limits-power-meter-step-2 limits-power-meter-step-3Installation is quick and easy.

Limits is attached to the bike between the pedal and the crank, and uses 4 strain gauges to measure the power being applied by the rider.

The power meter also houses an inclinometer (with a resolution of 1 degree), so it can tell when a pedal revolution has completed, so you get cadence as well. Torque data is also included.

Currently Limits only measures power on the left side, but a future release will measure power on both sides.

Limits uses Ant+ so will work with any Ant+ head unit or device. Limits is waterproof and has a battery life of 1 year, so you won’t be switching batteries out every week.

At sub $400, this power meter should bring power training within reach of most cyclists, and with the flexibility of easily moving it from bike to bike, it should be especially attractive to cyclists who ride and race across disciplines.

Limits is a crowdfunded project launching April 20, 2015.

Bikes Made From “Nature’s Carbon”

Renovo make bicycles out of wood, using hollow wooden tubes. Seems kind of primitive, considering we have all these fancy materials today, titanium, aluminum, carbon fiber… So why wood?

Some amazing things have been made from wood, including the world’s largest wingspan plane, the H4 Hercules… all wood!

Hercules Cargo Plane
The H4 Hercules all wood construction aircraft.

And according to Renovo:

Wood has unique engineering properties that deliver superior ride quality and durability compared to man-made materials, and…it’s sustainable, unlike other common frame materials. When the right wood is combined with an array of advanced technologies, it becomes a high performance material that will forever change your understanding of ‘wood.’

Wooden Mountain Bike

Renovo say that wood has superior damping ability, is light, stiff and durable. In short you get a smooth ride, excellent power transfer, superior handling and a bike that will last.

Plus wood makes your bike a one-of-a-kind handcrafted masterpiece.

The frames are significantly heavier than today’s super light frames, coming in at around 4-5 lbs, so not your best option if you do a lot of climbing.

Renovo offer a wide range of bikes, from commuter, road, mountain, touring and even time trial/triathlon. Prices vary by type, model and options, but prices start around $4,800 for a road bike.

The Samurai Bicycle

If Samurai designed a bicycle, it might look something like this:

Samurai Bicycle

Well that’s the story anyway.

The Samurai Bicycle The frame is made from titanium (a number of varieties) and features Ebikan welding, a technique where, instead of bending the tubes, small fan-shaped pieces are welded together, giving a slightly ribbed or corrugated look to the curves.

There are other distinctive features of this bike…

The chainstays are not horizontal, but rise up dramatically, to loop around and cradle the down tube. The down tube threads through the chainstay loop and then arcs down to meet the bottom bracket.

There is no seat tube. Intricate lattice design work joins the top tube to the head tube. The Samurai also features a belt drive, a rear disc brake, and internal cable routing.
